독일이 낳은 세계적인 철학자이다. 그는 쾨니히스베르크에서 태어나 고향의 쾨니히스베르크 대학에서 수학했고, 1755년 이 대학에서 철학박사 학위를 받음과 동시에 형이상학의 제1원리에 관한 논문으로 교수 자격을 얻었다. 그 후 그는 15년 동안의 사강사(Privat-dozent)를 거쳐 1770년 쾨니히스베르크 대학의 논리학과 형이상학의 정교수가 되어 은퇴할 때까지 이 대학에서 철학을 가르쳤다. 그의 주요 저서로는 이른바 3대 비판서라 불리는 『순수 이성 비판』(1781), 『실천 이성 비판』(1788), 『판단력 비판』(1790)과 『학으로서 등장할 미래의 모든 형이상학에 대한 서론』(1783), 『도덕의 형이상학』(1797) 등이 있다.
